Accessible Homes Australia (AHA) is redefining Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) on the Fraser Coast with its innovative Urraween Village in Hervey Bay, due for completion in early 2026.
Designed to meet the needs of individuals living with high physical support needs, the village will feature 12 state-of-the-art single-level SDA villas equipped with wheelchair-accessible amenities and 24-hour Onsite Shared Support (OSS). The development promises to foster independence while creating an integrated community connected to a network of care delivered with dignity.
As excitement builds for the completion and readiness for occupancy of these new homes, three care providers share their perspectives on how AHA’s accessible home, support and community model is changing the lives of those with disabilities.
A transformative model for supported living in Hervey Bay
Anne Ledgard, Support Coordinator – Fraser Coast
Following a tour of the Urraween Village site, local support coordinator for the Fraser Coast, Anne Ledgard, said AHA’s Hervey Bay SDA model is ‘the best thing since sliced bread’.
“Initially I had the expectation the village wouldn’t suit my clients, but I was completely wrong – it was perfect. The thought and care that has gone into the planning and design is incredible. It truly is a place for independent living,” said Anne.
“I now have five clients who are applying for a villa. AHA’s SDA model combines 24-hour care with on-site shared support. The cost-effectiveness of having round-the-clock care paired with individual carers is brilliant. It ensures residents feel supported, safe, and connected in their community.
“The location is tranquil and private, yet close to amenities like Hervey Bay’s biggest shopping centre, medical care, public transport, and local cafes. It couldn’t be better positioned for residents to enjoy both independence and convenience.
“The AHA team is remarkable. Their resident-focused approach is transformative, removing limitations and proving that people with disabilities can achieve amazing things. It’s wonderful to see such a positive model in action.”
Empowering Residents Through Thoughtful Design
Henry Bradford, CareMatch Australia – General Manager
As the current OSS care provider at AHA’s East Palm Beach apartments, Henry Bradford has witnessed firsthand the impact of AHA’s housing model in action. He believes the Urraween Village at Hervey Bay will take this success to the next level, following the collaborative site design with the AHA team and the residents themselves.
“At AHA, it’s all about the residents, and their involvement in the Urraween Village design process ensures the villas allow for the best independent living possible. Their feedback shapes the spaces they live in, from the practical layout of kitchens to the integration of smart technology. This ensures the homes are tailored to their needs and empowers them to live as independently as possible,” said Henry.
“The single-level villa model at Hervey Bay offers a quiet, homely atmosphere. Each villa will have its own back patio, allowing residents to enjoy a real sense of home. This style of living will encourage neighbours to interact while maintaining their privacy. This balance creates a true sense of community, where events like BBQs and holiday gatherings bring everyone together.
“Hervey Bay is an exciting step forward for tenants, the AHA team, and care providers. It isn’t just about accessible features; it’s about creating a lifestyle.”
Building Connection and Combatting Isolation
John Hill, Caring Queensland – General Manager
With years of experience supporting clients with disabilities, John Hill, General Manager at Caring Queensland, sees Urraween Village as a game-changer for independence and social connection.
“Isolation is one of the biggest challenges for people with disabilities. AHA’s Urraween Village solves this by creating a supportive network. Residents aren’t just living independently, they’re part of an inclusive community where they can connect and grow,” said John
“Hervey Bay’s cost of living can be challenging, but through the NDIS and subsidised housing at AHA, participants can enjoy a comfortable and affordable lifestyle in a secure environment. It’s an opportunity for people to have their ‘forever home,’ complete with gardens, lawns, and a gated community for safety and peace of mind.
“Urraween Village is about more than accessibility; it’s about making disability mainstream and empowering individuals to design their lives.”
A Vision for the Future

The combination of state-of-the-art design, community-focused living, and on-site care services ensures that residents can enjoy the freedom of independence while feeling supported and connected.
